ABSTRACT
Fungi are the most fascinating group of organisms distributed widely in different ecosystems. Strategic geographic location of the Indian subcontinent is a major hub of fungal resources which offers ample scope for their exploration as well as application. My curiosity in mycology initiated journeying freshwater lotic habitats of the Western Ghats and west coast of India. It was soon ascertained that the freshwater hyphomycetes serve as model group facilitating assessment of basic concepts of detritus food chain and aquatic productivity. Second fascinating group attracted my attention was the marine fungi in various ecosystems of the west coast playing significant role in nutrient turnover. Third striking aspect of my interest was macrofungi of the Western Ghats and west coast. The basic function and ecosystem services of all these groups is breakdown and transformation of organic matter. The impacts of decomposition is highly valuable in production of precious metabolites, enrichment of organic matter and pull other groups of organisms to drive the energy flow initiated from detritus ecosystem. All these research areas are highly fascinating in the Indian subcontinent owing to diverse habitats, varied environment, wide range of substrates and numerous fungi. Progress towards basic or applied facets of fungal diversity, significance of metabolites and sustainable ecosystem functions demands collaborative endeavors. Specific strategies and schemes for prospective harness of fungal ecosystem services in the Indian subcontinent have been discussed in this commentary.

ABSTRACT
Deep-sea is characterised by low temperatures, elevated hydrostatic pressures, low nutrients, total darkness and constant salinity. Presently numerous workers are engaged in this topic resulting in several publications, newer insights and contributions to biodiversity and understanding the physiology of deep-sea fungi. We used several techniques to isolate and culture fungi from deep sea sediments collected at ~5000 m water depth in the Central Indian Basin (CIB). These were identified by conventional, morphological taxonomy as well as by molecular taxonomy. Fungi were also directly detected in formalin-preserved deep-sea sediments. We also studied culture-independent fungal diversity at several locations in the CIB. Several environmental gene libraries were constructed after amplifying the sediment DNA using universal and fungal-specific internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and universal 18S rDNA primer pairs. This approach resulted in the recovery of several fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs). A few culturable-phylotypes and several fungal OTUs demonstrated high divergence from the existing sequences in the GenBank. Several of them were new reports for deep-sea sediments indicating hidden treasure of fungal diversity.Physiological characterization of the cultured fungi revealed that most of the fungi were mesophiles, psychrotolerants and barotolerant. Several of them produced cold-active enzymes having tolerance to high salinity. Thus it appears that deep sea sediments are repository for novel fungi. Their role in deep-sea ecosystem needs to be studied in future.

ABSTRACT
The concept of fungi based on an absorptive mode of nutrition that prevailed till the 1970s changed with discoveries brought about subsequently by molecular phylogeny studies. The term 'fungi' was thenceforth confined to the opisthokontan lineage, termed popularly as the Kingdom Fungi, while the Oomycetes, Hyphochytriomycetes and Labyrinthulomycetes that belonged to the Kingdom Straminipila were relegated to 'pseudofungi' or 'fungi-like organisms'. We argue here that the term 'fungi' should be used in a broad sense based on a nutritional mode and ecological function. We support our arguments based on those of a number of other eminent mycologists. We further suggest that to avoid ambiguity, the opisthokontan lineage of fungi should be termed as belonging to the Kingdom Mycetae. The term 'fungi' then would constitute a polyphyletic group of 'mycetaen fungi' and 'straminipilan fungi' that are found in the Kingdom Straminipila.

ABSTRACT
The AM associations are integral symbiotic associations of both wild and cultivated plants. It has been widely investigated in the cultivated plants but less so in the wild plants. In this article the AM diversity in some very important and threatened wild plants of the tribal belt of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh is being reported for the first time. The study area has a vast wealth of medicinal, aromatic and other economically important plants. With, the upsurge in tourism and increasing developmental projects like the Hydro electric dams, etc the floral diversity and their associated mycorrhizal diversity has come under great threat. It is in this context that along with floristics, investigations of AM fungi has been undertaken on the following threatened plants, majority of which are endemic to the region. Of late, much attention has been paid to the use of AM fungi in the establishment of forests and improvement of soil fertility. The plants investigated are: Acer caesium, Abies spectabilis, Betula utilis, Juglans regia, Rhododendron campanulatum, Quercus ilex, Hippophae tibetana, Sophora mollis, Elaeagnus umbellata, Rheum australe, Ribes alpestre, Juniperus communis, Piptanthes nepalensis, Saussurea costus and Fritillaria roylei. The reported three genera are Acaulospora, Gigaspora and Glomus and in these three genera 13 species of AM fungi have been reported and illustrated. The genus Glomus is the most predominant with 10 species.

ABSTRACT
The thermophilic mould Myceliophthora thermophila (Apinis) van Oorschot produces an extracellular thermo-acid-stable chitinase, which has been purified to apparent homogeneity by affinity adsorption followed by hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The pure enzyme is a monomer with a molecular mass of 43.0 kD on SDS-PAGE and pI of 4.0. Based on MALDI-ToF-MS/MS and LC-MS analysis of peptides, it was identified as glycosyl hydrolase family 18 protein. The chitinase is optimally active at pH 4.0 and 55 °C with T 1/2 values of 9 and 3 h at 55 and at 70°C, respectively. The K m and V max values (for colloidal chitin hydrolysis) are 0.396 mg ml -1 and 25.25 nkats mg -1 S -1 . It is strongly inhibited by Hg 2+ , Al 3+ and Fe 3+ , but stimulated by Mn 2+ , Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ . The chitinase is tolerant to organic solvents and detergents. It liberates N-acetylglucosamine and chitobiose from colloidal chitin degradation and has a potential to degrade powdered chitin and chitosan. The high temperature optimum and thermostability makes it a suitable candidate for the production of pharmacologically important N-acetylglucosamine and chitobiose from chitin. The cell walls of spores and hyphae are disrupted in Fusarium oxysporum, Curvularia sp. and Stachybotrys sp. due to the degradation of chitin in the cell walls. The enzyme arrests hatching of eggs in the nematode, Meloidogyne incognita and induces mortality in the insect larvae of Aedes aegypti as well as mealy bug (Maconellicoccus hirsutus).

ABSTRACT
The loss of forest cover results in ecosystem imbalance. As a result of deterioration of the biosphere, soil degradation, over exploitation of forests and population explosion accelerates the rate of deforestation and affects climate. Thus role of forestation in the sustainable development of the ecosystem holds greater promise. In this regard Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi as beneficial symbionts of forest plants not only help in the establishment of forest seedlings but also help in their growth, besides increasing soil fertility and stability, tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. A brief review on this aspect has been presented.

ABSTRACT
The present paper is an attempt to review and provide systematic information about the ecology, diversity, distribution and human relevance of wild coprophilous mushrooms the world over. The information provided herein is derived from a study carried out in the state of Punjab in India and records contained in more than 125 authentic monographic publications and research articles throughout the world. During the survey from the years 2007 to 2011in Punjab state, a total number of 172 collections have been observed, growing as saprobes on dung of various domesticated and wild herbivorous animals in pastures, open areas, zoological parks, and on dung heaps along roadsides or along village ponds, etc. High coprophilous mushrooms' diversity has been established and a number of rare and sensitive species were recorded during the study. Also while analysing the relevant references related to coprophilous mushrooms and their ecological places it was noted that dung is an important substrate which serves as a favorable niche for the growth of a variety of mushrooms throughout the world. The present paper aims to create awareness for conservation of the fascinating world of coprophilous fungi in their natural habitats. The status and taxonomic placement of each taxon in this review is updated as per MycoBank Database. The paper can serve as base line information and indicator for further mycological studies in India as well as in other countries with similar scenarios.

ABSTRACT
Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) are one of the widely distributed types of fungi forming symbiotic associations with almost all land plants. The beneficial association of these Glomalean fungi from the phylum Glomeromycota with plant roots dates back to about 460 million years ago, making it the most ancient type of symbiosis. These fungi constitute a crucial functional group of the soil micro-biome by determining the efficacy of agro-ecosystem through formation of a close interface between soil and plant roots. The extra-radical mycelial network associates with plant roots to take up resources from nutrient depletion zones (especially P) in the soil and in turn receive carbohydrates from the host plant, thus influencing plant productivity, diversity and ecosystem sustainability. The symbiosis plays a key role in nutrient cycling (C, N, P), plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, formation of stable soil aggregates, and various other ecosystem functions, making it important in restoration and conservation of disturbed lands. Advances in the scientific understanding on AM symbiosis have enhanced the potential for implementation of AM biotechnological approaches in different ecosystem processes. However, it is important to support further developments for production of efficient AM inocula and its application in biofertilization of crops to guide sustainable efforts. In this chapter, various strategies for AM inoculum production including pot cultures (soil based) and in vitro culture and its application in production of fruit, vegetable and plantation crops and floriculture are discussed.

ABSTRACT
Chitin has great applicability in biomedical and biotechnological fields because of its non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible nature, and having antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The most common source of chitin is the crustaceous shell; however, mushrooms are an alternative source for isolating these biopolymers because their cell wall has a high content of chitin. The main objective of this study was to isolate chitin from the coprophilous mushroom Coprinopsis cinerea and to determine its physico-chemical properties. The material characterization was done using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). We extracted 42.8 grams of chitin per 100 grams of mycelial biomass of C. cinerea. The extracted chitin had a significant similarity with commercial chitin, including diffractogram peaks, characteristic infrared analysis bands. The crystallinity index (CrI) value of chitin was calculated as 57.48%. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) indicated the presence of nanofibre on the surface of the chitin. The maximum degradation temperature of C. cinerea chitin was found to be 378°C by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This is the first report of extraction of chitin from C. cinerea, a coprophilous fungus and determination of its physico-chemical properties. This data gives us basic information on the possibility of introducing this biomaterial in the field of biomedicine.

ABSTRACT
The Omycetes, also known as “water molds”, are a group of several hundred organisms that include some of the most devastating plant pathogens. Among oomycete pathogen; Phytophthora infestans causing late blight of potato is most important foliar pathogen, causing significant yield losses. The present study was conducted to reduce fungicide load and work out alternate method for control of this disease. Different SAR compounds were tested and foliar sprays of different conc. of Salicylic acid, Jasmonic acid and Bion (Benzothiadiazole-BTH) and â- amino butyric acid were given for inducing resistance in potato against late blight pathogen. Concentration of Salicylic acid, Jasmonic acid and Bion @ 500 μM, and â- amino butyric acid @ 50 mM gave best control of disease among all tested concentrations. Protein content of treated potato plants varied from 6.4 to 7.7 mg/g fresh weight compared to 4.0 mg/g fresh weight in control. Induction of proteins and defense enzymes was systemic in nature in response to all the four elicitors. The SAR compounds tested also stimulated the activities of pathogenesis related proteins (Pr- proteins) i.e. â-1,3 glucanase, Peroxidase (POD), and defense related proteins i.e. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) from 26 to 99 % indicating induced resistance in treated potato plants as compared to control. Electrophoretic protein profiling of treated potato plants also confirmed the induction of pathogenesis-related proteins ranging from 15- 75 kDa along with some other proteins. Total chlorophyll and carotenoids also showed spike of 1% to 100 % in response to elicitors. Salicylic acid gave best results showing 77.7 % disease control followed by Jasmonic acid showing 75.1% while Bion and Âeta amino butyric acid gave 69 % disease control as compared to control plants. Thus integration of disease tolerance and salicylic acid spray schedule resulted in effective, eco-friendly as well as economical control of late blight of potato.

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
At the outset I express my deep sense of gratitude to all the MSI members for electing me the President of Mycological Society of India for the year 2019. During the last meeting of Mycological Society of India held in November 2018 at ARI Pune, deliberations were held to work for uplifting the activities of MSI so as to expand its horizons. In this regard President of MSI, Professor K.R.Sridhar has circulated some of the measures requesting all the MSI members to contribute in whatever way each one of us can do, so as to achieve the target. I have tried to summarize the measures he has suggested in the following points:
Towards the end of 2018 MSI lost two of its founder members and mycologists of repute, namely Professor B.P.R.Vittal and Professor Johnpaual Muthumary. In the last Executive meeting of MSI held at Pune, it was decided to dedicate the next volume of Kavaka to be released in June, 2019 (Volume 52) in the memory of Late Professor B.P.R. Vittal and subsequent Volume number 53 to be released in December,2019 in the memory of Late Professor Johnpaul Muthumary. Members are requested to contribute review articles and good manuscripts for these volumes so that these can be brought out in time.
My sincere thanks are due to all the authors of the articles included in this issue of the Journal. I also sincerely acknowledge the help rendered by the reviewers for the critical appraisal of the manuscripts which has immensely helped to improve the quality of the articles. Without their help timely release of the Journal would not have been possible.

ABSTRACT
The role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in improving plant growth is now well documented. Most of the studies on AMF-root pathogens suggest that AMF decreased or mitigated the disease severity. Consistent reduction of disease symptoms has been described for fungal, bacterial and nematode pathogens. Studies conducted so far suggest that the mechanisms of suppression may be due to morphological, physiological and biological alterations in the host. Thickening of the cell walls through lignification and production of other polysaccharides in mycorrhizal plants preventing penetration and growth of pathogens like Fusarium oxysporum and Phoma terrestris have been demonstrated. Higher concentration of ortho-dihydroxy phenols present in mycorrhizal plants compared to non-mycorrhizal plants was found to be inhibitory to the root rot pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii. The activation of specific plant defence mechanisms as a response of AMF colonization is an obvious basis for the protective capacity of AMF. Among the compounds involved in plant defence studied in relationship to AMF formation are phytoalexins, enzymes of the phenylpropanoid pathway, chitinases, peroxidases, pathogenesis related (PR) proteins etc. Mycorrhizal plants harbour higher population of microorganisms in the rhizosphere thus making it difficult for the pathogen to compete and gain access to the root. Further mycorhizosphere supports higher population of antagonists and siderophore producers. Thus the possibility of biologically controlling the root pathogens with AMF looks promising.

ABSTRACT
Visakhapatnam is a coastal city situated on the east coast of India. It is one of the cities included under the Smart Cities mission of Government of India. Recent studies have reported around 35 fungal taxa from the outdoor air of the city. There have been, however, few studies that has employed modern taxonomic tools such as gene sequence analysis to understand the fungal diversity. The present study was, therefore, initiated to characterize the phylogenetic diversity and clarify the taxonomic positions of the fungi isolated from aerosol samples collected from urban Visakhapatnam. In total, 22 fungi were isolated, of which 9 isolates were subjected to ITS-based phylogenetic analysis. In the phylogenetic tree, the newly generated nine ITS sequences clustered within Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus elegans, A. micronesiensis, Penicillium citrinum, P. oxalicum and P. steckii clades. Further studies employing a polyphasic approach, including mycotoxin analysis, will be required to accurately identify these fungi to species level and assess their possible effects on human health and coastal ecology of Visakhapatnam.

ABSTRACT
Mycophilic society around the world has always been looking for wild edible mushrooms during monsoon season since times immemorial. People have been collecting these mushrooms for several purposes including culinary, medicinal and sacred as well. Local inhabitants of various regions of the world belonging to different civilizations possessed ethnic information regarding uses of mushrooms in day to day life. This information has been capitalized and even strengthened through regular inputs from different parts of the world. Because of their time tested importance in human welfare over a period of time, mushrooms has earned the status of special creation of God. These mushrooms have played a pivotal role in the upliftment of social and economic status of the rural people by adding to their economic profits and serving their culinary needs at their door steps. The indigenous knowledge about utility of these wild mushrooms is an important area which needs to be explored scientifically for its wider use in human welfare. This manuscript presents a compilation of the published information about sociobiological and ethnomycological aspects of mushrooms at one place which otherwise is lying scattered in the published literature around the world.
Key words: Ethnomycology, food, income, medicine, sociobiology, traditional knowledge, wild edible mushrooms.

ABSTRACT
This study documents the spore assemblage of aquatic and aeroaquatic fungi (AAF) in urban street runoff of a southwest coastal city in India during southwest monsoon season. Depending on the extent of vegetation (high, moderate, low and very low) within surroundings, eight locations were selected to assess water in street runoff. From each location, water samples of street runoff were filtered through membrane filters (5 μm) to trap the spores followed by staining with lactophenol cotton blue. Among 24 samples assessed from eight locations, a maximum of 20 samples consist of AAF spores. Altogether spores of 35 species were found in street runoff with high relative abundance of Alatospora acuminata, Anguillospora crassa, Flagellospora curvula, Helicomyces roseus and unidentified fungus (sigmoid spore) (5.7-7.6%). Spores of A. crassa and unidentified fungus were common to all locations. The richness of species as well as spores decreased linearly across the locations with high towards least vegetation. Jaccard's similarity coefficient ranged from 53.1-75% among four locations with high-moderate vegetation, while except for one pair of locations (75%) similarity ranged from 20-47.8% in rest of the locations consisting of low vegetation. One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in species richness as well as spores of AAF in eight locations (p < 0.05). It is predicted that the AAF spores produced in the canopy in urban habitats were transferred to street runoff. It is hypothesized that the AAF spores in street runoff facilitate to monitor the status vegetation and in turn the extent of pollution in urban habitats.

This step seems to have been taken without much taking into account the credentials of the Journal, which have been built over the years through the successive efforts of earlier stalwarts of Indian Mycology .The Committee constituted by UGC has reasoned it because of the low score. I have been informed through written explanation by Professor Rajesh Jain, Secretary UGC that the scoring was done on the basis whether the journal has peer review policy, author's guidelines, well defined ethical policy, indexing, frequency and details about the commencement of publication. As you already know all these details are available on the official website of Mycological Society of India (http://www.fungiindia.co.in) as well as on the website of the Journal (http://www.kavaka.fungiindia.co.in). Also the Journal is being published regularly since 1973 without any gap and the digitized version of all the back volumes is available for free access on the website of the Journal. I, in my capacity as Editor-in-Chief have written a rebuttal intimating all the requisite information about the Journal for evaluation. To strengthen my argument I have also intimated the Kavaka rating by NAAS at 5.33, which stands testimony to the credentials of the Journal. My request to the honorable members of MSI and other mycologists is that they should not get disheartened by the unfortunate step the UGC Journals Team has taken ignoring the credentials of this prestigious Indian Journal which is being viewed by over 5000 visitors every month. Ever since we started the dynamic website of the Journal in 2014, over 259000 visitors has visited the website for various academic purposes including downloading, consultation and publication of the articles. This voluminous number of visitors visiting the MSI website from all over the World is a proof enough for the quality of material being published in the Journal. Kindly keep on contributing your good research and review articles to the Journal. With the type of information regarding the Journal I have supplied to University Grants Commission, I have every hope that shortly it will be there in the approved list of Journals.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the contributors and the reviewers of the research articles published in this issue of Kavaka.

ABSTRACT
Fungi living without any symptoms within the tissue of upper subgroups of are known as endophytic fungi. Since the discovery of Taxol, these fungi have received immense attention both from mycologists and microbiologists that resulted in the discovery of cryptocandin, camptothecin, vincristine and several other clinically useful small molecules. The Indian subcontinent, owing to its rich biodiversity, offers a great opportunity to discover unexplored fungi for pharmaceutical applications. For several years at Basic ResearchCentre ofHoechstMarionRoussel Limited and Research Centre of Piramal Enterprises, Mumbai, the prime interest was to use these fungi for drug discovery purposes using various enzymes, cell and target based screening to discover anticancer,anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial compounds.Various approaches including epigenetic tools, co-culture strategy,
biotransformation and gene-editing tools, which are not routinely used in drugdiscoveryprograms, are alsobriefly discussed.

ABSTRACT
As part of keratinophilic fungal diversity project in Maharashtra state of India, an unusual dermatophyte was isolated by hair baiting technique from soil collected from the vicinity of a village barbershop in Buldana district of Maharashtra. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S rRNA region of new isolate suggested that it belong to a new species of the recently circumscribed genus Nannizzia, forming unusual cylindrical to clavate macroconidia. Sequence similarity search of its ITS region in the CBS dermatophyte database showed a maximum similarity of 91% with Microsporum sp. (A. corniculatum)-CBS 365.81 and 90.4% with M. persicolor (CBS 871.70). Phylogenetically the new species is close to N. praecox and N. persicolor , forming a monophyletic clade with them in the ITS tree. The present communication describes this new species (N. graeserae sp. nov.) based on morphology and sequence divergence in the ITS region. The ITS sequence alignment of dermatophyte species thatproduce rough walled macroconidia showed certain base positions which have genus-specific nucleotide changes.

ABSTRACT
Edible fungi are used as antidiabetics since ancient times. In the present studies aqueous extract of some edible macrofungi viz., Calocybe indica Purkay. & A. Chandra , Cantharellus subalbidus Smith & Morse , Macrolepiota procera (Scop.) Singer , Pleurotus florida (Mont.) Singer, P.ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm., Termitomyces heimii K. Natarajan and Tuber aestivum Vitt. were analyzed for their in vitro antidiabetic activity.Tested macrofungi exerted a significant inhibitory effect on glucose movement out of dialysis membrane. This effect was found to be concentration and time dependent. Higher the concentration of aqueous extract higher its activity was. Most effective concentration in present studies was found to be 50g/L. Aqueous extract of P. ostreatus was able to inhibit glucose movement out of dialysis bags at all concentrations tested when compared with other macrofungal extracts. The result clearly suggests that these macrofungi can be used as an alternative therapy for diabetes treatment.

ABSTRACT
Pseudoperonospora cubensis, an Oomycetous fungus causing downy mildew in muskmelon is most important foliar pathogen, causingsignificant yield losses. The present study was conducted to reduce fungicide load and work out alternate method for control of this disease. Different SAR compounds were tested and exogenous foliar sprays of different conc. of Salicylic acid, Jasmonic acid and Bion (Benzothiadiazole-BTH) @ 50µM, 250µM, 500µM, 1000µM and of β amino butyric acid of 20 mM, 30mM, 50 mM, 100mM were given for inducing resistance in muskmelon against downy mildew. Concentration of Salicylic acid, Jasmonic acid and Bion @ 500 µM, and β amino butyric acid @ 50 mM gave good control of disease. Protein content of treated muskmelon plant varied from 9.6 to 12.7 mg/g fresh weight compared to 3.9 mg/g fresh weight in control. Induction of proteins and defense enzymes was systemic in nature in response to all the four elicitors. The inducers also stimulated the activities of pathogenesis related proteins (Pr- proteins) i.e. β-1,3 glucanase, Peroxidase (POD), and defense related proteins i.e. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) from 26 to 99 % indicating induced resistance in treated muskmelon plants as compared to control. Electrophoretic protein profiling of treated muskmelon plants also confirmed the induction of pathogenesis-related proteins ranging from 15- 75 kDa along with some other proteins. Total chlorophyll and carotenoids also showed spike of 2% to 91 % in response to elicitors. Salicylic acid gave best results with 93.8 % disease control followed by Jasmonic acid with 87.2%; whereas Bion and β amino butyric acid were almost at par with each other and gave 76 % disease control as compared to control plants. Thus integration of disease tolerance and salicylic acid spray resulted in effective and eco-friendly control of downy mildew in muskmelon.

ABSTRACT
Azo dyes are extensively used in textile industry to dye the fabrics. The unbound dye enters into the environment through textile industry effluents and contaminates the surrounding water bodies. Azo dyes are known to be cytotoxic and genotoxic to living beings. High amount of energy is required to break the stable N=N- bond of azo dyes. Microbial degradation of azo dyes by bacteria and fungi have been extensively studied. The present study was carried out employing 12 fungal strains, each of 6 from terrestrial and mangrove forests for decolorization of azo dyes. Laccase and peroxidase assays were performed to identify the positive strains. Diaporthe sp. of terrestrial forests and Trimmatostroma sp. of marine origin were positive for laccase assay while none of the other strains were positive for peroxidase test. Azo dye degradation studies were performed with positive Laccase fungal strains. Three azo dyes namely, Congo red, Crystal violet and Remazol brilliant blue were chosen for degradation studies. Degradation studies were performed with individual dyes at 12.5 and 25 µg/mL concentrations. The 25 µg/mLconcentration of Azo dyes was used to study the pH optima at 5,6,7,8 range by keeping temperature constant at 28 oC and by incubating the treatments between 1 and 7 days to select the optimum conditions forAzo dye degradation by the selected fungi. Diaporthe sp. could degrade the azo dyes at pH 5 and/or 6 whereas Trimmatostroma sp.at pH 7 and/or 8 to the maximum extent at the end of the 7 th day.

ABSTRACT
Endophytic fungi were isolated from leaf and bark (phellophyte- endophytic fungi of bark) tissues of the monocotyledon tree, Areca catechu L. growing in two different habitats. Five hundred leaf and bark segments were screened for endophytic fungi. A total of 305 endophytic fungal isolates representing 27 different fungal taxa were isolated. Leaf tissue had more endophytic fungi than the bark tissue. Hyphomycetes were the most dominant group in this study followed by Coelomycetes, Ascomycetes, Zygomycetes and sterile mycelia. Both the habitats had few common endophytic fungi and some appeared to be host and habitat specific.

ABSTRACT
This paper deals with identification, characterization and documentation of an interesting isolate exhibiting unique morphological characters on different artificial nutrient media isolated as phylloplane fungus. This isolate was identified based on morphological, cultural, molecular sequence data. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted using ITS region and 28S rDNA gene regions. Results revealed that, the present isolate belongs to the genus Arthrinium and is closely related to Arthrinium rasikravindrae Singh et al. (2012) reported from soil collected from the Arctic Archipelago Svalbard, Norway. To our knowledge, this is the first report of documentation of Arthrinium rasikravindrae isolated as saprophyte from India. As a part of ex situ conservation, this taxon is preserved for long term in National Fungal Culture Collection of India (NFCCI) following cryopreservation method.

ABSTRACT
Seven biodiesel plants, namely Jatropha curcas, Ricinus communis, Pongamia pinnata, Sapindus mukorossi, Mesua ferrea, Terminalia bellerica and Cascabela thevetia were collected from oil fields of Assam for isolation of endophytic fungi. Besides morphological characterization, molecular identification of the endophytic isolates was done by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS). The sequences were submitted to NCBI GenBank while the phylogenetic tree was submitted to TreeBase for obtaining accession numbers. Diversity assessment of the total 27 fungal isolates obtained from 155 segments of different plants was carried out to assess the distribution patterns. Ten numbers of fungal isolates obtained from Cascabela thevetia were dominant when compared to other plants. There were high colonization rate in leaf part of plants when compared to other parts which was also indicated by one way ANOVA with a significant colonization of fungal isolates in leaf part of the plants. Density of Colletotrichum sp. was dominant with 26% relative frequency. Total lipid extraction of the fungal isolates was performed and application of one way ANOVA indicated a significant percentage of total lipid found in isolates SPSRJ27 and SPSRJL36 isolated from leaf part and isolate SPSRJL35 isolated from stem part of the plants. ABSTRACT
This study provides functional attributes of uncooked and cooked edible tender fruit bodies of an ectomycorrhizal gasteroid mushroom Astraeus hygrometricus sampled from the Western Ghats of India. The pH-dependent protein solubility was highest at pH 10 in uncooked (p<0.01) and cooked samples with least solubility at pH 8 and pH 4, respectively. The least gelation concentration was 18% and 20% in uncooked and cooked samples, respectively. The water-absorption capacity was higher in cooked samples (p<0.01), whereas it was opposite for the oil-absorption capacity (p>0.05). Emulsion activity was higher in uncooked samples, while emulsion stability was higher in cooked samples (p>0.05). The cooked samples showed high foam capacity (p<0.01) as well as foam stability (p<0.001). The principal component analysis (PCA) depicted that the proximal components like total lipids and crude fibre contents have major role in controlling the functional properties. The functional properties of uncooked as well as cooked tender fruit bodies of A. hygrometricus have selective advantages and serve as valuable raw material in production of functional foods and pharmaceutical products with desired qualities.

ABSTRACT
In the present investigation, 46 endophytic fungi were isolated from surface sterilized plant parts (root, stem, leaf and petiole) of six medicinal herbs viz., Aloe vera (L.) Burm. f., Abrus precatorius L., Asparagus racemosus Willd., Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don., Hemidesmus indicus (L.) R. Br. & Plumbago zeylanica L. and 34 endophytic fungi were isolated from three medicinal shrubs viz., Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet, Adhatoda vasica Nees and Ocimum sanctum L. A total of 12 genera of fungi including Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Bipolaris, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Fusarium, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Pestalotiopsis, Neocosmospora and seven sterile forms were identified. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was dominant in Asparagus racemosus, Catharanthus roseus and Plumbago zeylanica. Maximum similarity of endophytic assemblages was observed between P. zeylanica and Asparagus racemosus. Notably, the fungi identified as Fusarium proliferatum KY853412 and Neocosmospora falciformis KY853414 based on ITS-rDNA and LSU (D1D2) rDNA sequence analysis, were found to be host specific. Maximum species richness and diversity of endophytic fungi was recorded in Asparagus racemosus. Highest species evenness was recorded in Hemidesmus indicus and it was minimum in Catharanthus roseus.

ABSTRACT
Microorganisms are ubiquitous in distribution. They are present in diverse environments including extremophilic regions and adapt physiologically to these environment. In the present study, isolation and screening of acidophilic fungi was carried out from eight mines of Chhattisgarh region viz., Laxman coalfield mine, Kusmunda mine, Dalli mine, Rajhara mine, BIOP mine, Hirri mine, Rawan mine, Nandini mine and one ore-dumping site of Bhilai Steel Plant. A total of 64 fungal isolates belonging to nine genera i.e., Aspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, Sterila, Mucor, Trichoderma, Fusarium, Phoma and Paecilomyces were isolated, identified and evaluated for their acid production ability. Of the 29 positive acidophilic fungi assayed quantitatively, Aspergillus niger gr. NFCCI-3303 and Penicillium sp 2 NFCCI-3305 were found to be significantly higher producer of organic acids and can be good source for biomining.

ABSTRACT
Fusarium wilt incited by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis (Fom) cause severe losses up to 100% in melon worldwide. Fusarium is epidemic due to continuous cultivation of susceptible varieties. Different edaphic factors influence wilt development in melon. Among preventive measure, resistant varieties are the most reliable control measure in hand. Four Fom physiological races were identified: 0, 1, 2 and 1, 2. In majority cases, resistance was governed by Fom-1 (race 0 and 2) and Fom-2 (race 0 and 1). Fom-2 encodes a protein which is characterized by the presence of NBS-LRR (Nucleotide Binding Site-Leucine Rich Repeat) domains. Fom-3 and fom-4 resistant gene have been identified which can built resistance along with Fom-1. While most of the present cultivars are susceptible to races 1, 2. Accessions of sub sp. agrestis have high level of resistance to races 1, 2 while, certain measurable resistance have also been found within sub sp. melo viz., few Far-East melon. Indian melon germplasm have great potential to combate against existing and newly evolving Fom races. Fluorescent study may open new window for identifying resistant cultivars. Biotechnological tools for identifying resistance genes can serve for selection of genotypes. QTL and omic's approach were reported for developing multiple resistant cultivar for different races. An integrated approach may prevent disease until durable and multigenic resistant variety/hybrid will not develop.

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to synthesize safe, novel and cost-effective silver nanoparticles (SNPs) without using any synthetic reducing and capping agents. Endophytic fungal extract of Pestalotiopsis versicolor (Speg.) Steyaert was used for the synthesis of SNPs. The synthesized SNPs were tested for their antibacterial and azo dye degradation efficacy. The synthesized SNPs showed signature surface plasmon resonance at 425 nm. The size and morphology of SNPs were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Crystallite nature of the SNPs was confirmed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SNPs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and also showed good azo dye-degrading potential against Congo red, Rhodamine B and Orange G.

ABSTRACT
Present investigation pertains to study the impact of different culture media, temperature range, pH range, incubation period and effect of light and darkness on the vegetative growth of Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Mill. Out of the media selected for evaluation, best mycelial growth (6.3cm) was recorded in Malt Extract Agar (solid medium) and Yeast Glucose Medium (liquid medium), which is 7.9 mg/ml. Out of the six different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40˚C), best mycelial growth was obtained at 30 ± 1˚C in both solid (6.3cm) as well as liquid medium (8.2 mg/ml). Acidic pH (6.5) supported the best mycelial growth in solid (6.3 cm) as well as liquid medium (12.9 mg/ml), when the mycelium was grown in media with pH ranging from 3.0-10.0. For incubation period, the experiment was conducted for sixteen days in Yeast Glucose Medium and maximum mycelial growth (6.93 mg/ml) was recorded on 13th day of incubation. Under light condition mycelial growth was quite less in both solid (5.06 cm) as well as liquid media (6.46 mg/ml) in comparison to dark condition under which growth was 6.3 cm in solid medium and 7.63 mg/ml in the liquid medium, which is comparatively on the higher side.
